Everyone at some point in life deals with failures and difficult situations that could lead to long term physical health issues. They could start with seemingly innocent eating binges to cope with work stress, but that could lead to diabetes or obesity or both. People could start smoking, drink alcohol excessively, or turn to illicit or prescription drugs as a coping mechanism but these always lead to serious physical disease later. Hence recognizing an insidious behavior or habit and doing something about it at an early stage would help prevent morbidity and mortality in the long run. But the field of psychiatry has been stymied in treating patients due to the societal stigma. As a psychiatrist, I know I would face a double edge sword treating patient and keeping them survive stigmatization in the more serious mental cases.

Since medical school, I found myself fascinated with the intricate relationship between mind and body. I realized that my sensitivity to the feelings of others and my innate readiness to help rooted my interest in psychiatry. During my core rotation in psychiatry, working in different primary care settings in tri-borough area of new York city and my current employment as Clinical physician in the department of forensic psychiatry at Central New York psychiatric center, exposes me the sad reality that so many people suffer needlessly from stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses that eventually could lead to physical health issues. During my other medical rotations, I had seen how the rigors of treatment can create mental distress to patients, but no attention was given on how the stress surviving a disease was affecting their mindset. I felt that psychiatry was a lone voice in healthcare, often misunderstood by the public that thinks healthcare is all about treating infections, cancer, diabetes, HIV/Aids, or heart ailments and so many other fancy diseases. In fact, one cannot say he is truly healthy unless both mental and physical health exists together. It appears to be a vicious circle of stress leading to disordered thinking leading to physical ailments leading to stress and so on. A psychiatrist needs to intervene somewhere in the stream. I am ready to take that challenge.
